What is National News?

National news is a subfield of journalism that covers events, issues and developments with broad national implications. This can include politics, economics, major disasters and international events that affect the country as a whole. It differs from local news, which focuses on stories relevant to a particular community or region such as city government, crime reports and human interest stories.

NPR’s network is following the ways the federal shutdown is affecting people and services nationwide. NPR is also covering the latest developments at the CDC, including controversial advice from outside vaccine advisers and a new request for temporary workers to carry out next year’s national head count.

Q1 2025 was a good quarter for cable news, with Fox News finishing as the most-watched cable network in primetime and total day. CNN and MSNBC both saw gains compared to the same period in 2024, but still lagged behind FNC.

World news is a news media jargon term that refers to articles about a global topic that have been sent by foreign correspondents or – more recently – via distance communication technologies such as telephone, satellite TV and the Internet. It’s an offshoot of journalism that started in the 17th century, when it became easier to publish newspaper articles across Europe thanks to innovations like the telegraph. Today’s big news agencies prepare hard news stories and features and then distribute them to their clients, who may be other newspapers, magazines, television channels, corporations or intelligence agencies.
